Bone marrow transplantation is an accepted modality of treatment for many diseases. There are several posttransplant nutrition-related complications that have a direct impact on energy expenditure. The literature is unclear on how to calculate energy expenditure accurately for these patients. The following case presentations highlight the variation in energy expenditure that occurs when two energy equations are used. Based on these findings, it is recommended that energy expenditure be measured via indirect calorimetry.
