Division of Gastroenterology, Medical College of Virginia Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond Certain disease states, strict diets, or excess nutrient intake can affect the normal balance of micronutrients and trace elements. Over time, syndromes of excess or deficiency states may be recognized. Some conditions are more common and predictable than others. This article reviews the important micronutrient and trace elements relevant to nutrition support and offers monitoring suggestions for clinical practice.
