Monitoring Therapeutic Interventions in Critically Ill Septic PatientsDepartment of Critical Care Medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Correspondence: Correspondence: Paul Marik, MD, FCCP, FCCM, Professor of Critical Care, Department of Critical Care, University of Pittsburgh, 640A Scaife Hall, 3550 Terrace Street, Pittsburgh, PA, 15261. Electronic mail may be sent to pmarik{at}zbzoom.net. Sepsis is the leading cause of admission to intensive care units in the United States. Although the treatment of sepsis is complex and multimodal, nutrition support plays an important role in the management of these patients. The diagnosis of sepsis, disease category, and severity of illness and the change in sepsis severity and organ function over time affect the delivery of nutrition support. This paper reviews the diagnostic criteria of sepsis, the use of "sepsis biomarkers," and regional and global markers of organ function in sepsis and quantitative measures of illness severity and organ dysfunction.
